Review

I always read novels without reading reviews, with a blank slate. This psychological thriller book was a page-turner for me. I had a reading slump for quite some time. I barely finished A tale for the time being in two months and this! I finished it in the afternoon.

This novel has a great premise. Theo Faber is determined to solve the mystery of Alicia Berenson, the quiet patient. However, the trip you are on is a turbulent one that fills you with worry, paranoia, and even obsession as you hunger to know the truth with each turn of the page. The plot is generally exciting and pace. It reads how a thriller should read with several turns and fascinating bits of information in a constant tempo.

I agree; the writing style could have been more good and more…I can say intriguing, but overall, storytelling is sophisticated. Michaelides includes so many red herrings and false starts that the book takes on an unintentionally campy tone. Despite the book’s fast pace, it takes a while to get into the meat of the story.

The Silent Patient is a thriller with a great ending. When all is disclosed, it is a jaw-dropping, heart-stopping discovery that shakes you to your core. And for that reason alone, I am willing to overlook many of its flaws. I was perplexed by the main mystery, despite having guessed it a few pages earlier. When it was reviled, I went back and reread a few sections. The basic framework of an excellent plot is present; all that is required is some retooling and a little more nuance.

HIGHLY, highly recommend picking this book up if you haven’t already thought of doing so!🍻
